One of my best surprises about the dining scene in The Woodlands TX area is GenuWine wine bar at 6501 FM 1488. It is hidden in the back of the Target shopping center at FM 2978 and FM 1488. The surprise is that it is so much more than a wine bar. It is a restaurant that can easily compete with any other place that advertises itself as a restaurant. In fact, it has the best wedge salad in the area. It has several excellent sandwiches and fresh small flatbread pizzas. They excel at small bites like their crab cakes and stuffed mushrooms. It is my favorite place to go and enjoy a few glasses of wine and share a bunch of different plates. It is open for lunch and dinner and has a new covered patio that is perfect for happy hour.
Now lets talk about the wine. GenuWine is locally owned and staffed by some true wine nerds. They have an excellent selection of wines I’ve never heard of. They have a sommelier on staff and many of the wines are from small vineyards. They are all of excellent quality. The service is friendly, knowledgeable, and confident. All you have to do is say, “I like (a kind, a brand, a color)“ and they will pour you something you will love. I’ve never even looked at the menu. I just go with an open mind and let them suggest something. I’m always delighted. And my husband who likes craft beers more than wine can also pick from their selection of draft and bottles.
The other thing that makes Genuwine special is that it has live music three nights a week (Thurs, Fri, Sat, sometimes Wednesday). It’s mostly local talent, and you can hear a variety of entertainment to round out a lovely evening.
If I am totally honest, while Genuwine has great music, excellent fresh ingredient food, crafty beers, superb wine, and expert friendly service, I really go there for the cheesecake. The vanilla cheesecake is the best I have honestly ever had. I dream about it at night. It’s that good!
