Want A Comcast Discount? Talk To The Cancellation Department!

October 1st, 2010

I previously blogged about comparing cable / satellite TV providers and about my eventual DIRECTV choice and installation process.  This will the the last installment of my cable TV saga.

We have had DIRECTV for couple of weeks now and have been pleased.  It has been excellent timing with all of the new Fall shows starting this week.  We have recording tons of new shows in HD plus a plethora of kids shows and still have 80% of our hard drive left.  Our old Comcast DVR would be past full by now.  Being able to watch our recordings in both the family room and bedroom is awesome, and I love being able to checkout out baseball scores (along with pro & college football, nascar, and soccer) by clicking the little red button on my remote control.  We have also had a few heavy storms pass through this week without any service disruption.

With DIRECTV going well, I called Comcast to cancel our cable tv service last week.  As I mentioned in my first post on this subject, I had talked to 3 different agents before switching last week.  I mentioned to each that I was going to switch providers if they were not able to lower my price.  None of the three were able to do lower our price.  Of course, when I actually talked to a person to cancel, they were able to offer me my existing $71.50 Preferred Package for $40 and my $16 HD/DVR service for $10 for 12 months.  This comes out to a savings of $36.50/month or $450/year.

The obvious yet ironic lesson here is, if you really want to stay with Comcast, talk to the cancellation department first.

I tested this tactic yesterday by calling the cancellation department to cancel my internet service because I got a great promotional deal from En-Touch. That phone call resulted in my internet bill being lowered from $58/mo to $40/mo.

Thank you Comcast!
