According to the 2010 Census data, the population of the Cypress-Fairbanks area in northwest Houston has grown a lot over the past 10 years. According to an article in the Ultimate Cy-Fair section of the Houston Chronicle, the 2010 population in the 10 primary zip codes that make up Cy-Fair ISD is 587,142. That is a 69% increase in the 2000 population of 347,472! Not surprisingly, zip code 77433 in Cypress was the fastest growing at 394% thanks to master planned communities like Bridgeland, Blackhorse Ranch, Cypress Creek Lakes, and Towne Lake.
If Cy-Fair were a city with a population of 587,142, it would be the 28th most populous city in America according to a city population list on Wikipedia. Cy-Fair has more people than:
(As a side note, the data on the U.S. Census Bureau FactFinder site has the 2010 population of Cy-Fair School district at 496,751 which is about 90k less than what the Chronicle is reporting.)
The Chronicle article also mentions that the “Cy-Fair district is the largest in the state with the ‘recognized‘ accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency for 2011″ which is great! However, since Cy-Fair is the 3rd largest school district in the state, this essentially just means that the two larger ISDs (Dallas and Houston) were not “Recognized”.
Lastly, Kelli Durham, Cy-Fair ISD’s assistant superintendent for communication, had this quote:
“Only 60 percent of the district’s 186 square miles of land mass is developed - making the area a prime location for developers,”
We really need to get Hwy 290 widened!
