Bridgeland Pet-Peeve — Narrow Driveways at the Sidewalk

August 4th, 2011

There are a lot of things to love about the 11,000 acre master-planned community of Bridgeland.

* No houses backing up to major roads — Love it!  I’m surprised more developments are not doing this.

* 3000+ acres of parks / lakes / common areas — Awesome stuff.

With the great decisions come some decisions that I have to question.  I mentioned the narrow streets in my “Bridgeland Dislikes” video.

Another decision that I did not mention in that video are that all of the driveways in Bridgeland get narrow at the sidewalk near the street before they expand again at the street.  What is the purpose of this?!?!  I assume it was done for cosmetic reasons, but you really cannot even tell unless you are looking at a satellite view like the image below.

On the other hand, this “feature” comes with annoyances such as:

I am working with a client who has a contract on an inventory home in Bridgeland which may fall through because the curved driveway is a big hinderance to them entering and exiting the garage.  Also, the driveway is shorter than average due to being on a cul-de-sac which makes nearly impossible for more than 1 car to park on the driveway at the same time.  We are in the process of working with the builder to petition the developer to allow us to expand the driveway.

I really hope the developer rethinks this narrow driveway policy.
