Tropical Storm Don May Bring Very Welcome Rain to Cypress!

July 28th, 2011

If you have driven down Bridgelands Lake Parkway in Bridgeland or taken a walk in the trails around Coles Crossing over the past few months, you cannot miss the dozens and dozens of brown trees scattered throughout the Cypress area.  We are currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in Texas history, but, hopefully, a little bit of relief is on the way.

Tropical Storm Don is churning in the Gulf of Mexico just passing over Cancun and Cozumel.  The current track has it hitting the Corpus Christi area early Saturday morning.  Since we would be on the north, or “dirty” side of the storm, that could mean some very welcome rain relief for the Houston area.

The National Weather Service currently has the chance of rain for the Houston area at 50% for Friday and 30% for Saturday.  Those chances could go way up if Don’s track moves farther north of Corpus Christi or could go significantly down if it starts to track south of Corpus.

The best case scenario for us in the Houston area would be for Don to make landfall in the Matagorda Bay area, which the GFDT and GFDL models have it doing in the map below.  We would be far enough from the center to now worry about damaging winds but get the bulk of the rain from this storm.

There is a good editorial and comment discussion going on about this storm in an article by the SciGuy, Eric Berger, on the Houston Chronicle’s web site.
