Having an amazing holiday doesn't have to result in an empty wallet. These are some great ways to save during the holiday season.

1. Initiate a gift exchange.
Instead of cutting back on your budget for everyone in your family, initiate a gift exchange. When your list is narrowed down to just one person, you are able to focus on that one person and make their gift extra special. Everyone in the family will benefit from this cost-saving tool and for a little added fun, keep quiet about who has what name.

2. Skip the high-priced cards.
Buying a card for $3 to $5 for everyone on your list can add up quickly. Instead of buying cards at your local retail store, make beautiful handmade gift tags. You can find everything you need at your local crafts store and everyone will appreciate the effort that you put into them. Beautiful cardstock and stickers will go a long way to make your gift tags stand out.

3. Shop online.
If you sign up to be on the mailing list of your favorite stores, you will often receive special online offers and discounts for buying gifts online. Online shopping also makes it easy to compare prices with other stores and you won't waste time and money driving to the mall. If you are planning to visit another family member for the holidays, save yourself the hassle of having to pack gifts by having all your presents shipped directly to your final destination.

4. Buy gift wrap at the dollar store.
Visit your local store where all items are a dollar for all your gift-wrap needs. They offer gift bags, tissue paper, wrapping paper, and ribbon for much less than you would spend at any other retail store.

5. Pack a cooler.
Traveling during the holidays often means stopping at fast food places for lunch. Avoid the cost and calories associated with these meals by packing a cooler ahead of time. Beverages, sandwiches, and your favorite snack foods will keep you from buying items along the way and will be a much healthier option as well.
