Effective Sept 1 2011, Changes in "Texas Homestead Exemption," Law

August 31st, 2011

Changes in Texas Property Tax Laws -

Homestead Exemptions

Effective September 1, 2011: To qualify for a residential homestead exemption you must provide HCAD with a copy of either your TX driver's license or TX ID Card. The address on your driver's license or ID card must match the physical address of the residence for which you are applying. This means that every client you have sold a home to in 2011 has the wrong form. Use this as an opportunity to reach out to your clients, advise them of the change(s), so that they can receive the tax benefits provided under the Homestead Property Law.
