According to the American Wind Energy Association, Texas leads the nation in wind energy. Most wind-turbine farms are in the western part of the state, but new projects will add more wind turbines to areas in the panhandle and along the Gulf Coast.
Wind energy means cleaner energy for Texas residents, but are wind turbines bad for property values? A new study from the Berkeley Lab at the U.S. Department of Energy says they aren't.
The study analyzed more than 50,000 home sales within 10 miles of wind facilities in nine different states and found no evidence that wind turbines have a negative effect on a home's sales price. This is contrary to some claims that wind turbines are viewed as a "disamenity," like a landfill.
Researchers suggest that any negative impact that would come from having a wind turbine close by, like noise issues, might be negated because of their positive qualities, such as mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, no air or water pollution, and the economic benefits local communities receive from the wind turbines.
