It's that time of year when many of us pack up the family and go on vacation. Please make note of the following tips that may make your trip a little safer.
Make sure to leave your home with a "lived in" appearance. Have a good, trusting friend, neighbor or relative pick up any mail or newspapers that may stack up. Have a radio or television on a timer for certain times of the day and evening. Turn your alarm on if you have one.
- Always stay alert to your surroundings
- Have a well-planned itinerary. Last minute changes sometimes rush you.
- Keep your car doors locked at all times.
- Try not to carry those big purses with long straps. Crooks like these because they are easier to grab from your shoulder. Put your identification and credit cards in a clutch-type purse or fanny pack.
- When you pull into a parking lot, pay attention to where you park.
- Lock your vehicle and make sure you have the keys to your vehicle.
- If you see someone suspicious in the parking lot, report it.
- Remember, there are people out there that are waiting to take advantage of us. They are watching for people not paying attention.
Airport Safety
- Carry only the credit cards you plan to use on your trip.
- List the credit card numbers and issuers' phone number to report if cards are lost or stolen.
- Avoid displaying large sums of cash, use travelers checks and credit cards instead.
- Double-check your credit card before returning it to your wallet. Some credit card scams include exchanging your credit card for an expired or stolen one.
- Arrive at the airport early to avoid flight delays. They more you rush the less alert you will be.
- Avoid carrying your wallet in your back pocket. Carry it in your front pocket or coat pocket.
- Never leave your luggage unattended for even a brief moment.
- Never carry or leave cash or jewelry in your luggage.
Hotel/Motel Safety
- During arrival and departure, stay with your luggage at all times. Mark your luggage so it can be easily identified.
- Do not leave valuables in your room. Store them in room safes or safe-deposit boxes at the front desk.
- Upon arrival to your room, make sure all doors and window locks are in working order.
- Avoid leaving clues that your room is empty. Leave a radio or TV on while you are away.
- If you valet park, leave only your ignition key. Remove all valuables that might tempt theft.
- Never leave your room door open, even if you're just going down the hall to the ice or vending machines. These are some safety tips for a safer vacation. Just use common sense and beware of strangers and con artists.
