10 Tips for Creating great Blogging Ideas

10 Tips for Creating Great Blogging Ideas

Writing a blog is tricky and time-consuming enough that you don't want to do all that work and then have no one read, share or comment on your post. And a blog that's ignored can't help your marketing. But don't despair. It's been found that certain types of blog content inherently drive more engagement.

When you're writing blog posts, make sure you create a mix of content. Then track the topics your audience responds to and tailor future posts to those preferences. Here are the types of content that seem to work with many audiences:

1. Track trends.
In every industry, there's always something happening. Writing a post about trends showcases your expertise and lets you put your own special spin on a topic, which makes it fresh, even if its been covered extensively.

2. Review a book.
A book review can show off your smarts and gives you an opportunity to talk about timely information. Check out the newest releases in categories that relate to your business. Then offer your opinion of the work. And before you post, ask the publisher or author if you can get a review copy to offer as a giveaway on your blog. Contests draw people in!

3. Create lists.
If you're wondering about the effectiveness of lists, consider this. You're in the middle of reading one right now! People like lists because they're quick to read and get to the point efficiently. And you're giving them a series of actionable items they can try out right away.

4. Tell them what's bothering you.
If something bugs you, channel that irritation into a thoughtful blog. But before you hit "publish," take a moment and check that your post isn't angry or nasty in any way. That kind of writing will hurt your position more than help it. Always show respect to the person or organization you're criticizing, but do express your honest feelings. Remember, your goal is to create change. Ideally, you'll spark some lively discussion in your blog's comment section.

5. Publish a Q&A.
People like conversational pieces, so a Q&A, or interview, can often pull readers in. Interviews are also an easy way to get more video content onto your blog.

6. Focus on what's different.
Ask yourself why this day or event or person or company or product or idea is different. In other words, what's special about what you're blogging about? This often helps get a story going.

7. Answer those questions.
What are people always asking you? Think of some of the questions you get about your work and then sit down and answer them. The resulting posts should be interesting to a lot of people.

8. Interview yourself.
Imagine you're a reporter from the most important trade magazine or website in your field. Ask yourself all those questions you'd like to see real reporters take the time to pursue. Then write out your answers. (Delete the questions and you've just created a series of posts on some topics in your field that aren't getting much coverage.)

9. Pretend you're talking to a child.
Explain some part of your work as if you were telling it to a child. The simplicity and candor of the writing can be very appealing.

10. Always end with a question.
Don't forget to invite your readers to share their feelings on the topic you've just posted.

Here's to better blogging that truly drives engagement.... Enjoy a great month!
