PINK FLAMINGO CHRISTMAS

December 4th, 2010

PINK FLAMINGO

If you live anywhere near a tropical area, you will find one of the most beloved ornaments for yards, homes, business and just plain everyday…..The loved and sought after ‘PINK FLAMINGO’

For those of you who have no intimate knowledge of the pink flamingo I can tell you, that no proud coastal community would be caught without them.  These beautiful long legged, gregarious wading birds are extremely fascinating.

They are very social, and enjoy flocking together. Much like us here on ActiveRain!

Flamingos filter-feed on brine shrimp and blue-green algae. Their oddly shaped beaks are specially adapted to separate mud and silt from the food they eat, and are uniquely used upside-down.  The pink or reddish color of flamingos comes from carotenoid proteins in their diet of animal and plant plankton. These proteins are broken down into pigments by liver enzymes.

Flamingos produce a cropmilk, like pigeons and doves. Both parents nurse their chick by regurgitation. Young flamingos feed on this milk, which also contains red and white blood cells, for about two months until their bills are developed enough to filter feed.

In the small waterfront community where I live there is absolutely no shortage of pink flamingos.  You find them in the form of mailboxes, windsocks, garden décor and adorning the walls and doorways of homes.

So this Holiday Season, don’t forget the beloved Pink Flamingo in your decorating and gift giving.
