WINTER SOLSTICE /New Beginnings

December 20th, 2010

Winter Solstice

The winter Solstice takes place tonight December 20th into tomorrow December 21st @ 23:38.  This time is precisely calculated within a second.  The solstice marks the beginning of winter, and is the shortest day with the longest night in the year. The Solstice occurs when the earths’ axis is farthest away from the sun, and the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn. This marks the start of longer days and is celebrated as a time of New Beginnings.

Along with the Winter Solstice this year, we will have a total Lunar Eclipse, beginning around 1:40 am to 2:54 am.  The Earth will move between the moon and the sun thus causing a red shadow to cover the moon.  According to the National Weather Service, a Solstice Lunar Eclipse is very rare, the last recorded one occurring December 21, 1638 and the next projected occurrence to take place December 21, 2094.

If you are a night owl or even if you aren’t, tonight’s show promises to bring a standing ovation!!
