While researching the history of the high school homecoming mum, I found this homecoming tradition is found mainly in Oklahoma and Texas. The introduction of the chrysanthemum was a corsage for the girlfriends and mothers at Homecoming football games. (Note: I grew up in the Midwest and (at that time) my high school did not have a football team. So, what I didn’t know I missed has been found in Texas!)
Originally these corsages were very basic with a few ribbons accenting the flower; which, of course, were school colors. Today, the silk flower has replaced the real mum as the centerpiece for the girls homecoming mum. But the mum has “evolved” over the years! You will see them now with long flowing ribbons, teddy bears, and bells, trinkets that reflect the wearer’s activities (sports/band/dance/etc.), fuzzy boas, and maybe even battery operated mini-lights! Needless to say, the “Everything’s Bigger in Texas” attitude has resulted in ripped tops or dresses — I have seen a vest or halter worn by female students to support the body-length and almost as wide homecoming mums!
I would be remiss if I did not mention the Homecoming garter worn by the guys. As you would imagine, these mums are worn on the arm with a large silk mum at the center. Usually made by the mother of the guy’s homecoming date, the garters have similar ribbons, trinkets, etc., but on a smaller scale.
The Galveston County high schools in the Clear Creek Independent School District have celebratory carnivals, parades and, (of course), homecoming football games coming soon to CCISD’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. I have listed these game dates below. Anyone can attend a high school football game, and the cost is minimal. Be aware that parking lots fill up fast, and have fun looking at all the glamour, sparkle, and volume of homecoming mums and garters!
