As I drove east on Highway 96 in League City the other day, I noticed a new structure coming out of the ground on the south side of 96, in front of Tuscan Lakes. Always inquisitive about new construction in town, I checked out the billboard on the site introducing the coming of Watershed United Methodist Church and couldn’t help but think that I had heard of this church before. After wracking my brain, I remembered meeting Pastor Matt Neely a few years back at Victory Lakes Intermediate School when both of our children participated in an event. We began talking and I was impressed with his story. In 2007, Pastor Matt was called to begin this new church and to say it was a grassroots effort is an understatement. The mission was to “shed God’s love to inspire Christ-entered living.”
The church’s first meeting was in his living room but the congregation quickly outgrew those confines and they began renting a new venue, the Clear Creek High School Cafeteria. All the while, they set their sights on a more permanent church building so the community would know they would be around awhile. After “persistent prayer, the generosity of many and a heroic effort”, The Watershed Methodist Church phase 1 building is about to become a reality.
The new church sanctuary will hold around 300 people and will have rooms for children and youth ministries to happen as well. The Watershed is on track to open on by the end of 2012 if all goes well!
Good luck to Pastor Matt and his congregants!
