The City of Nassau Bay’s City Council recently approved the purchase of solar lights to replace 234 street lights in the city. The decision was made after two solar lights were installed (in the city) and monitored through a web-based application for several months.

The solar lights are from ClearWorld, LLC., an alternative energy systems solution provider. Nassau Bay City Manager, Chris Reed, was quoted on the City of Nassau Bay website saying: “We are very impressed with the appearance, quality, and the ability to monitor faults and programming like dimming and scheduling through a web-based application. Not only will these lights be environmentally responsible and significantly reduce electricity and maintenance costs, they will be reliable during storms and power outages.” City staff has estimated that a savings of around $100,000 over a period of 15 years, and decrease the time city staff spends on maintenance.

The lights are not affected by flooding, can withstand 150 MPH wind, and can last up to 3 days without sun. Hurricane season begins on June 1^st and continues through November 30^th. Installation should begin in the spring, once the bid to install had been announced. Of course, Nassau Bay residents do not wish for a bad storm to hit their area, but will find some sense of security, knowing their streets will be lit once the solar lights are on their streets.
