Barkitecture Houston 2010 displayed two houses at Market Street in The Woodlands recently. The structures have been displayed at venues throughout Houston and Montgomery County culminating in the exciting live/silent auction at the Friends For Life “An Evening of Art for the Animals” gala event May 13, 2010 at the River Oaks Country Club.
The proceeds from the auction of the structures will benefit the animals served by the No Kill programs of Friends for Life and the humane education programs of Healing Species Texas. The Healing Species is an 11-week violence intervention / character and compassion education outreach. Through the assistance of rescued dogs, dogs nobody else wanted, the organization teaches children a process from which to understand and overcome abuse, neglect, and grief while teaching life skills in self-esteem, conflict resolution, anger management, respect for the feelings of others, and in gaining success through acts of compassion and responsibility instead of returning “violence for violence.”
Healing Species of Texas is currently teaching in Klein and La Porte and has finished 16 fifth-grade classes at Travis Intermediate. Funds from the Barkitecture event will help bring the program to the schools that are expressing interest.
“We are so grateful that The Woodlands Market Street and the Township have given us the opportunity to display Barkitecture in Montgomery County,” said Joy Southard, director of Healing Species of Texas.
