The Club at Carlton Woods, home to a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and a Tom Fazio Championship golf course, has been named the “Best Private Course in Houston” in the Houston Chronicle’s Golf Guide 2010 in the April 1 edition. The ranking is based on a Chronicle survey of more than 1,000 area golfers and over 300 club pros, superintendents and people who make a living at golf, according to William E. Langley, CCM, vice president of club operations for The Club at Carlton Woods.
Todd Hveem commented on The Club at Carlton Woods being named the best private course in his article, “The Best Golf in Houston and Beyond,” in the Chronicle’s Golf Guide 2010. “The Club at Carlton Woods has only been open since 2001, but it didn’t take long for its quality to shine through.”
The Nicklaus course is located in the gated community of Carlton Woods while the Tom Fazio Championship golf course is situated in the gated enclave of Carlton Woods Creekside. Both par-72 courses have been designated as “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary”, through the Cooperative Sanctuary Program for golf courses, an Audubon International Program. The Nicklaus and Fazio courses are for play by members of The Club at Carlton Woods. Carlton Woods is one of only two gated communities in the United States to offer a private Nicklaus/Fazio combination. “This is a prestigious honor for The Club at Carlton Woods to be recognized as
the ‘Best Private Course in Houston’ by its golfing peers,” Langley said. “Both the Fazio and Nicklaus courses have continuously been recognized for excellence in Houston, Texas and America by such publications as Golf Digest, Dallas Morning News and Avid Golfer.”
In the past three consecutive years–2007, 2008 and 2009–both the Nicklaus and the Fazio courses at The Club at Carlton Woods have been ranked as one of the “Top 100 Best Residential Courses in America” by Golfweek and one of the “Top 10 Courses in Texas” by the Dallas Morning News. The Club at Carlton Woods was featured in the “Top 100 Most Prestigious Clubs in America” by Golf Connoisseur in 2007. In 2009, the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) awarded the “Junior-Am of the Year” and “Invitational of the Year” to The Club at Carlton Woods as host club for the 2009 HP Boy’s Championship.
