Sugar Land: developers and politics

January 24th, 2011

Hmmm...interesting cooincidence.

It was recently reported that Sugar Land City Manager Alan Bogard had withdrawn his name from consideration as Corpus Christi City Manager. Meanwhile, former Sugar Land Mayor, David Wallace was mentioned in this March 2010 article in the Corpus Christi CallerTimes

"The City Council and public won’t hear details about a proposed development that includes a water park until the developers are part of the conversation.

City Manager Angel Escobar reversed plans to update the council Tuesday about a proposed development near the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Some council members, already concerned about the rocky relationship with the developers, didn’t want to have that discussion unless the development team was there.

The two developers have asked previously to give a presentation to the council, but never received a date. It’s now set for next week.

There have been communication problems between the city and the two development firms, Wallace Bajjali Development Partners and Innovative Leisure Partners.

Wallace Bajjali, a Sugar Land-based firm, oversaw the redevelopment of downtown Waco and has other projects in progress. Innovative Leisure Partners was in charge of the entertainment aspects of the world’s largest mall in Dubai and its CEO, Chuck Hendrix, is the former chief operating officer for Six Flags."

Also in Houston Chronicle March news:

Just weeks after Sugar Land entered an exclusive negotiating window with a developer to bring minor league baseball to Fort Bend County, another effort is afoot to give Greater Houston an additional baseball option.

The East Montgomery County Improvement District signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ventura Sports Group and Sugar Land-based Wallace Bajjali Development Partners to build a stadium in Montgomery County with the intention of hosting independent minor league baseball in 2012.

The site would be in Porter just off the U.S. 59 feeder road near the proposed intersection with the Grand Parkway extension.

According to the parties involved, the ballpark — located on 42 acres of land purchased by Wallace Bajjali — would be part of a larger development, which could feature a hotel, dining and retail.

"We bought this land knowing it was a growth corridor," said David Wallace, CEO of Wallace Bajjali and former mayor of Sugar Land.
