A Brefe History of River Oaks:
River Oaks was developed in the early 1920’s by Will Hogg and Hugh Potter. Many of the original stately homes were designed by noted architects John Staub, Birdsall Briscoe, Charles Oliver and MacKie & Kamrath. The River Oaks property owners’ association (www.ropo.org) strives to provide residents with outstanding service including a private patrol, stringent deed-restrictions enforcement, and back door trash pick-up twice a week. The boundaries are: North: Buffalo Bayou – South: San Felipe or Westheimer – East: Bellmeade – West: Timber Lane or railroad tracks. Approximately 1,625 properties are located within River Oaks.
Trivia tid bit: The very first Bus service in Houston (and the very first in Texas) was the River Oaks line. It was established in November of 1925 in order to add more appeal to the area in its early development. Residents traveled between two terminal; one was located downtown at the corner of Fannin and Capital, and the other was at the River Oaks Country Club.
