A Brief History of West University:
A small residential town established in 1911, West University Place is today a neighborhood of vintage bungalows and newly constructed two-story traditional homes protected by stringent deed restrictions and zoning ordinances formulated in 1937. When first developed by A.D. Foreman, West University Place was an out of town backwater with swamps, muddy streets, poor drainage and few city services. Pragmatic residents and a committed developer transformed the neighborhood into an incorporated entity whose highest priority was the creation of an excellent infrastructure.
In 1939, West University Place opted not to consolidate with the City of Houston and has remained an independent municipality with excellent city services, parks, police, pool, and community events. West U has green spaces, open recreational areas to enhance property values and an excellent quality of life for residents. Residential stability, prime location, community spirit and a fascinating mix of older residents, young professionals and growing families have made West University Place a unique and desirable city within a city.
