Regional Transportation Projects Could Change the Way We Travel

October 13th, 2017

As Montgomery County and the region continue to grow, it comes as no surprise that more road work on our highways is set to begin. One of the latest changes for local travel is the extension of Highway 249. The new section will be 4 miles between the Harris County Line and Pinehurst. The goal of this extension is to help traffic flow and lessen congestion, which is an inevitable side effect of population growth. The good news is, this extension and other roadway projects are already getting underway, before traffic becomes too much for our roads to bear.

Back in June of this year, Montgomery County Commissioners Court approved the Montgomery County Toll Road Authority Highway 240 expansion project. The County will be paying for the expansion with revenue bonds, which will cost $73 million when completed.

Earlier this month, Verde Partners donated 255 acres to the Highway 249 extension. The donated land stretches from the Grimes Countywide Line to east of FM 1486, and is valued at $5.1million. The land donation will help ensure the county can finish the project. This generous gift should lower the overall cost of the project as well.

The Highway 249 extension will be completed within four phases, and is planned to  begin by mid-November. Completion is expected by 2020. TxDOT has specific details available about the project. Articles published by both Community Impact and Houston Public Media include a summary review of what residents can expect with the new expansion.

Along with the Highway 249 extension, there is also the Dallas to Houston Texas Bullet Train project. Private company, Texas Central Railway (TCR) put forth a proposal to run a high speed railway (HSR) across Northern Texas, providing a quick and easy transportation option across the region. While being privately funded to the tune of $16 billion, Texas Central Railway is currently conducting an environmental survey through the Texas DOT. The impact survey should be completed and open to public review this year. According to the TCR Facts page, construction could begin as soon as 2018.
