Be Comfortable in Your Montgomery County Home This Winter

October 20th, 2017

Cooler, drier weather is approaching now that fall is here. This is the perfect time to prepare your home for winter weather. You may think with our mild climate there isn’t much to do, but in this part of Texas, we do experience some winter weather conditions. Some winter maintenance will help keep your home energy efficient and comfortable year-round. The following tips and ideas can help you prepare your home for winter.

Colder weather means turning on the heat. Whatever the type of heating system you have, keep it maintained by a professional; an annual inspection can save you a lot of time and money. You can clean air intakes and vents, and often change the air filters yourself. Doing so will help make your system perform better, and can lower your heating costs.

If you have a fireplace or wood stove, clean it regularly. Replace old gasketing around the doors, and inspect the inside for any visible damage. Sweep your chimney and check the flue to ensure it is working properly. Seasonal maintenance of your stove will help ensure safe fires to keep you warm. You will also find you need less wood or pellets this way. Hiring a professional to inspect and clean your fireplace or wood stove at least every couple of years is worth the investment.

Clean your roof, and check for damage. If you find damaged shingles, hire a professional to help. Remember safety first around the house. Inspect and clean your gutters as well, and replace any damaged pieces. Check your siding and trim for issues, and repair or repaint as needed. This will keep your home looking pristine and help prevent larger problems later.

As we do have the occasional cold snap in this part of the state, it’s important to remember plumbing is particularly susceptible to cold. Wrap insulation around any exposed exterior piping; this can also help lower heating costs. If we experience a cold snap, run a small drip on your outside faucets to keep the water flowing, or close off your exterior plumbing and run the water out of it to prevent freezing.

Inspect your windows and doors for air leaks. Hold a candle close to the window, or door, and watch the flame to see if it flutters. Movement indicates there is a leak. Note the direction of the movement to determine where the leak may be, and see if a seal needs to be replaced. It’s also good to check for any cracks in glass panes; it’s better to have them repaired now than to deal with winter weather getting inside.
