Creating a spot for homework

October 9th, 2009

Creating a place for homework

Along with involvement in your child’s education, creating a convenient, efficient, organized and properly stocked homework or study space is one of the most important things you can do to help your child with homework. With unemployment on the rise, more adults are returning to college, so remember the adult students in your home.

Before selecting and arranging the homework spot, consider:

  1. Personality: Does your student require a quiet, out of the way area or does he need to be nearer family activities? Either way, you want to be able to monitor his activities, especially when using a computer.
  2. Choosing the spot: Since a homework spot can be any size, what are the options?  Is an entire room available or a small nook or even an oversized beanbag on the floor? A sturdy desk or table and a comfy chair are always good investments.
  3. Involve your student:  Letting your child help select the area, furniture and lighting, as well as assist in arranging the space, will encourage pride and use of the area. Don’t forget a bulletin or magnetic board for displaying artwork, awards, certificates, mementos, notes and ribbons.
  4. Storage and supplies: A well-stocked study area with needed storage is a necessity. A desk drawer, a small chest, or plastic, mesh or woven baskets can all provide the required storage and contain the clutter. A separate container or drawer, labeled for each user, is a plus. Along with paper, tablets, pens, pencils, markers, you may want to add a dictionary and reference books for developing alphabetization, organizational and research skills.
  5. Watch that pocketbook:  There is no need to break the bank. You may already have most of these items. So, look around the home, visit garage and yard sales, and discount stores’ clearance aisles and websites.
  6. Have FUN! The homework years fly by.
