KATY LIFE STYLE HOMES: REMEMBER FIFA WORLD CUP SOCCER STARTS JUNE 11

June 10th, 2010

Sports fans across theworld can not wait any longer as the FIFA World Cup Soccer starts tomorrow morning with the host nation South Africa taking on Mexico. I personally LOVE soccer. I have had the pleasure to have personally attended easily more than 1,000 soccer games during my life time. Most of those games involved my children or step-children playing in a e game. I was lucky enough to be able to attend one World Cup game in Dallas back in the 1990's when the US was the host nation. Sweden played Ethiopia and beat them in a close game. Sweden came in third that year. I firmly believe unless you actually attend a World Cup game or know what a soccer game is all about a person cannot really appreciate the skill level or the speed of the game. Yes soccer is not a key sport in the US for most adults but our kids and their children love the game. Soccer is the World's game and the World Cup Championship game will be watched by more than one billion people across the world. If I am not mistaken the Super Bowl has not had one billion people watch it over the last 10 years if you added all ten years up. I also love the NFL and the Super Bowl so football fans don't get on my case..

The really key early match in this years World Cup is the US playing England on Saturday June 12. ESPN will begin live TV coverage at 1:30 PM ET. My family and I like to watch the English premier league games and we all are Arsenal fans. Saying this I am definitely rooting for the US even though we are probably huge underdogs. The English papers totally dismissed our team saying the Yanks will come in 4 Th out of four in our bracket during first round play. Yes soccer in England is an institution and the players, WAGS, and fans are known all around Europe. However, ask an English soccer fan how many times has England won the World Cup? One time to be exact!!! Now that is really pathetic for a country where soccer is more popular than any religion.

Last week several Liverpool fans actually burned an American flag as those fans were trying to show how much they hate the US based owners of the Liverpool Premier League team. Burning the American flag to me is committing one the ultimate insults. Yes I realize that people in Liverpool have probably the same mentality and IQ as the folks who inhabit East Texas but still burning our flag!!! I hope our Men's Soccer team beats the H_ll out of England and the English team doesn't make it out the first round bracket.

Watch the US play on Saturday and support our team. The Katy area has excellent soccer programs and teams for both boys and girls. The High School soccer program in Katy is excellent and the area always produces several outstanding teams.
