January is here and the temperatures are dropping. Houston is not usually known for its cold weather, but it does receive freezing temperatures from time to time and now it’s time to winterize your home and save on heating bills.
- Insulate exposed pipes and cover exterior faucets with Styrofoam covers or towels
- Disconnect, drain, and remove all hoses and place in storage area, drain AC pipes
- If you have a pool, set valves so that water flows through all pipes
- Water plants before freeze and turn off sprinkler system (read How to Protect your Sprinkler System in the Event of a Freeze)
- Check all doors and windows for leaks / Replace old weather stripping and caulk where needed
- Call a service professional to clean and inspect your heating system / Replace filters
- Check attic insulation to make sure you have enough / Wrap exposed pipes
- Check roof for loose shingles and secure flashing around chimneys and dormers
- Have chimney cleaned and inspected / Close the damper when not in use
- Set programmable thermostat
These are just a few things that can save you from expensive repairs and high energy bills this winter. For more information or to schedule an appointment call Jill Smith at 281-704-3749 today!
