Before considering any major overhaul, start with the basics of home staging.  Clean your kitchen from top to bottom and make sure to deep clean all surfaces, from the top of the cupboards to the baseboards. Clean the inside of the oven and refrigerator. Hide away trash cans and make sure odors are concealed with baking soda or a good fresh air freshener or candle, nothing overpowering.  Make sure that light fixtures are dust- and cobweb-free. Wipe down ceiling fan blades too.

Now de-clutter.  Remove extra small appliances; a good rule is to leave no more than two appliances on your counter.  Show off your counter space and leave it well cleaned and shined.  Make sure your dining table and chairs are clean, chairs are pushed in, and extra leaves are removed to make the kitchen feel as large as possible.  Add a touch of warmth by placing a fresh arrangement of flowers or bowl of fresh fruit to the table or island to welcome the potential buyers.  For an added appeal, add a nice cookbook on a stand and some new, colorful dish towels to brighten up the space.
