The Houston Heights area REALLY IS being flooded with new kids!

October 29th, 2010

Recently posted by the Heights Kids Group:

Was your child born in 2008 or 2009?

Check out the astounding numbers below. According to the HK membership roster, there are a reported 214 HK children born in 2008 and 230 HK children born in 2009. (Note that this data reflects those HK members who have listed their children's birthdates on the roster.) That's nearly THREE TIMES the number the number of reported HK children born in 2005: just 78 kids.

For the most part, this is the crop of kids that just entered kindergarten. At those numbers, demand already far exceeds supply for places at Harvard, Travis, Wilson, Helms, etc. What's going to happen when the 214 reported HK kiddos born in 2008 and the 230 reported born in 2009 are ready for kindergarten?
This is why we need to ramp up our other neighborhood schools, pronto.
My child started kindergarten this fall, and I know many families whose children didn't get a place at their HISD school(s) of choice. They were stuck scrambling for a Plan D or E, and in some cases, looking for spots at private schools they hadn't even considered before. In years past, these cases were isolated incidents. With the rapidly growing number of kids in the Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, it's becoming more common each year.

If you're not zoned to your school of choice, you can't count on your child getting a transfer to Harvard, Travis, Helms, Wilson, etc. The in-demand schools in our neighborhood are already past capacity. And since we have evidence that we'll have nearly three times as many kindergartners looking for places in 3 or 4 years, we need to work quickly to make all of our neighborhood schools attractive options.

Please be aware that if you are not zoned to the school of your choice, there's a good chance that your child may need to attend your neighborhood (zoned) school. So please get involved now--community and parent support is the best way to build a great neighborhood school.

And finally, here are the numbers. These should look familiar if you were following the thread re: Advice on Heights Schools, and the subsequent post re: the number of HK kiddos born each year. (Thanks for crunching the numbers, mariaonufrow.)

And if you're interested in helping our team of HK volunteers working on Field, please consider attending their kickoff meeting, which will take place Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Here's a link to a post with more info about it:
