A group of community parents have been investigating ways to revitalize Hogg.  A few parents met with Dr. Grier to discuss the need for significant change and improvement to Hogg.  He is bringing the issue to Dallas Dance, Chief Middle School Officer and said they would get back this coming week.  He asked us to gather Grassroots support. 

To demonstrate that improving our neighborhood school,  Hogg MS,  is an issue widely-supported by the community, an online petition has been created.  We are hoping to gather 1000+ signatures from the 77007, 77008 and 77009  zip codes in the next 10 days or so.

Hogg Middle School is located at 1100 Merrill Street Houston, TX 77009 and serves the community bounded by I-45 to the east, Memorial Drive to the south, 610 Loop to the west and various streets through the Greater Heights community to the north.

Main feeder schools for Hogg are Browning Elementary, Crockett Elementary, Harvard Elementary, Memorial Elementary, Stevenson Elementary and Travis Elementary. This community is a racially and socio-economically diverse population in which the number of school-aged children is growing.

Since the 2003-2004 school year, the school’s enrollment has dropped by nearly 25%. Over the last several years, the school has received a TEA rating of “Academically Acceptable.” In 2009, only 64% of Hogg 8th graders passed the TAKS math test and less than half passed the TAKS science test.

Due to years of poor performance and a failure to provide students with the rigorous level of education that each and every child in our community deserves, significant numbers of families zoned to Hogg MS have lost faith and are choosing not to attend their neighborhood school. This is not acceptable.

Hogg Middle School should, and can, be a school of high expectations that provides a safe environment for students to learn and excel in math, science, language arts, history and technology as well as to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. All this should be within an environment that engages and inspires. The children of this diverse neighborhood deserve a quality education.
