Reagan has a rich history in the Houston Heights. The school was designed by John F. Staub and William Ward Watkin—respected local architects who also devised homes in River Oaks and structures at Rice University. The school opened in 1926 and construction completed in 1927. Fast forward 80 years or so and you see a newly renovated and expanded school which maintains and enhances the original historic structure. The original façade was kept, while later additions designed by Rey de la Reza Architects were replaced with new buildings to create a full-service urban campus on approximately 15 acres.
This amazing campus has an equally amazing principal in Connie Berger. She attended Reagan herself and was voted “most likely to succeed”. Recently she decided to start Reagan HS on the International Baccalaureate (IB) path to becoming an IB World School. She is working closely with Hogg Middle School in this endeavor. Twenty staff members have been sent to IB training and teachers have started changing the curriculum in order to transform the school into an IB candidate school. IB Learner profiles have already been adapted in all classrooms. A site visit this year will determine if Reagan HS will qualify to become an authorized school. Becoming an authorized school allows them to continue the process of becoming an IB World school which takes 2-3 years.
Principal Berger has also implemented the CollegeBoard SpringBoard curriculum in English and Language Arts, providing students with a larger selection of Pre-Advanced Placement (AP) courses. A total of 21 Pre-AP courses are offered at Reagan HS and enrollment in these courses has increased. Students completing these advanced courses will graduate with college credits thus saving money upon entering college by having some of their course work already completed.
The student population continues to increase and is at an all-time high of almost 2100 students. Magnet transfer applications to Reagan’s Technology Magnet Program continue to rise and come from more than 29 other schools across the district. Over 30% of the students are enrolled in the Magnet program. Regular transfers have also increased tremendously, but 75% of those have been denied to allow for zoned students. Principal Berger hired 10 new staff members to meet the demand of which two teachers have their doctorate degree.
Students must love Reagan because their attendance rate was the highest of all comprehensive high schools in the district last year at 96%.
