Living With Urban Wildlife--How to Protect Your Home

November 11th, 2013

With the weather getting cooler, many animals will start to seek warm shelter-- make sure it's not your attic or home!

Houston may be the 4th largest city in the country, but it’s also an area brimming with urban wildlife. Raccoons, opossums, birds, bats, squirrels and plenty of other animals also call Houston and the surrounding area home. Sometimes these critters can become unwelcome house guests in the attic or elsewhere and cause a lot of damage or headache.  It doesn’t have to be that way! There are preventative steps you can take to ensure what the Texas Wildlife Center calls a “peaceful coexistence”  and protect your home.

1.       Don’t feed Fido or Fluffy outside.  It’s likely to attract unwanted dinner   guests.

2.       Screen that chimney. Exposed chimneys are a favorite for nesting birds and they can even make their way into your house through an open fireplace.

3.       Keep watch. Periodically check your roof and eaves for open access points, make sure they’re properly sealed so critters don’t take up residence in your attic.

If you think you may have already have a wildlife problem, the Texas Wildlife Center has some great resources on what to do. But, remember prevention is always best so take this new season as an opportunity to critter-proof your home so everyone can live in peace!
