Costa Rican Adventure Part Two: Exploring an Unfamiliar Land

September 9th, 2015

Meeting so many nice people in Costa Rica was great and made it easy to get around. And this was important because we had a lot of exciting places we wanted to visit during our stay there. We were lucky enough to visit a few Costa Rican national parks and wow, what an experience! At Ostional National Wildlife Refuge one night, we witnessed Olive Ridley turtles each depositing up to 100 ping pong ball sized eggs into holes they dug in the sand. They then covered up and camouflaged them before returning to the sea. We had never seen anything like this before and it took our breath away.

In Manuel Antonio National Park we finally saw our sloth. While we saw many creatures we had never seen before, this was the most elusive and coveted of the animals my kids wanted to be sure and lay eyes on. Mission accomplished! Upon entering the park you hike about a kilometer to a most amazing beach and one of the most beautiful I have seen. Here we witnessed the much talked about monkey thieves. While we expected to see monkeys snatching tourist’s backpacks and anything else they thought might contain food, much to our surprise we saw a special performance when a monkey stole a bag of potato chips from a raccoon that had just committed the same crime. Kharma.

We also visited amazing beaches such as Playa Conchal where there is little sand but instead you walk upon shells that have been worn smooth over time. This keeps the water clear and the sand out of your car, sweet!

We hiked to and toured a local farm where the guide gave us fruits and other yummies we had never seen before right off the tree or bush. We also tried to milk cows and it turns out that is so much harder than it looks.

Experiencing all the beauty and adventure offered by Costa Rican parks and outdoors made me grateful that Houston is committed to greening the city. We are already benefiting from this in the form of a revitalized Buffalo Bayou Park and the Bayou Greenways project will only continue to build on this. The recently passed Memorial Park Master Plan is set to take the city’s largest greenspace to new heights and a proposed plan for a natural swimming hole in the city is truly exciting. I’m going to miss the beauty of the Costa Rican landscape, but I also realize it’s a good time to be living in Houston for those who enjoy taking advantage of the outdoors. And it’s only going to get better!
