In case you didn't know already, the Hike & Bike Trail in the Heights opened completely several weeks ago with the finishing of the last bridge crossing on the trail down by White Oak Bayou. And WOW! What a fabulous addition it is! It runs from 26th Street and Nicholson, south along Nicholson to 7th Street, east on 7th to about Cortlandt and then it heads SE over White Oak Bayou & under I-10 to about where Target is.
Just this past Sunday, my family and I strolled along the north side of the trail as it passes by us about a block away. It was a little chilly and somewhat windy, so I was amazed to see so many people just strolling along the trail! Maybe it was because it was the second sunny day in recent memory, but it was still more people than you would normally pass on such a walk on such a day.
We got such a warm and friendly feeling from all the pedestrian and bicycle traffic passing by us. Our 5 year old was trying to walk our 9 pound dog, but really the dog was walking him, and the two of them were creating quite a bottleneck in the whole system. Even though we could see people coming blocks away, our 5 year old, dog and leash were still in their way when they came near us. We saw no less than 40 people out walking in the 6 blocks we went on the path. Unbelievable!
I have only heard positive things and excitement about the new trail. I hope you find it to be the same. The link below is a map to the City of Houston Bikeway System.
