I always enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July here in the States. Houston, in particular, always offers up plenty to do on this national holiday. Different parades can be found all over the greater Houston area as well as multiple impressive fireworks displays. The Freedom Over Texas celebration at Eleanor Tinsley Park and the Houston Symphony’s Star-Spangled Salute at Miller Outdoor Theatre are two Houston traditions that are especially entertaining.

Not being in America for Independence Day, I figured we probably wouldn’t get to experience anything like that. But, to my surprise, we actually ended up attending a bash that would rival some of the celebrations going on back home. On our way to our planned destination on the 4th, we stumbled upon Costa Rica’s July Fourth celebration to which all American citizens in the country are invited. It is a Costa Rican tradition dating back to 1961 when the US Embassy used to invite all citizens to a party at the US Ambassador’s residence. We paid a minuscule entry fee and then all the food and entertainment inside was free.

After 2 weeks of blander than expected local food (we are so spoiled here in Houston), the Nathan’s hot dogs, Pepsi, TCBY and kettle corn never tasted better! There were bands, water balloon games, three legged races and even square dancers! The last of which was something my kids had never seen and didn’t understand why they were being forced to look and listen now, haha!  Happening upon this unique Fourth of July celebration was quite lucky and made for a July Fourth I will never forget!
