Slowly Being Converted

January 21st, 2016

They say you can't teach an old dogs new tricks. I think the saying comes more the fact that the teaching of an old dog is hard, which is why we often just avoid the trying in the first place. Like the 'old dog' that I am, I've been avoiding converting to this (yes, this is it) new email marketing system at work for months, choosing instead to furrow my own stubborn but tried-and-tested method to get my email messages to you.

I can admit to have been converted to many things as I reach the 4th anniversary of living here amongst y'all. Tailgating, trucks and SUV's, cheap gas, calling it gas and not petrol (one of many other word conversions), Central Market, some American beers (that's much harder for me to admit than you think!), the weather, American football and fabulous food, to name but a few.

Some elements of US life have taken longer and incurred actual physical pain to be converted to and I don't just mean the process of getting permanent residency! Converting my higgledy piggledy English teeth to straight American has taken nearly 2 years but it's finally done. Note, this was not a cosmetic decision (I'm not THAT vain) but after 4 years I now look American!

I thought I'd spare you the before and after close-up pictures (available on request) and instead show you a mould made of my 'new' lower teeth which I think shows how even they are now. I have nothing but the highest praise for my orthodontist and his amazing team and would be happy to refer him to you. Hopefully you feel the same about referring me when you need or know someone who needs a real estate agent in Houston!

This is a humorous, light-hearted and personal look at living in Houston, Texas from the point of view of an Englishman living and working here. It will hopefully throw some light on the differences in things between here and in particular the UK.
