ouston has been ranked No. 1 on USAA and Hiring Our Heroes' 2014 "Best Places for Veterans: Mid-Career" list.

The list ranks the best cities across the nation for mid-career veterans who are transitioning from the Armed Forces to civilian life. The study was commissioned by USAA and Hiring Our Heroes to help veterans identify the best U.S. metro areas for them to find civilian careers utilizing their military skills. The study evaluated factors such as veteran wage growth, certification and license transfer, the availability of jobs in top industries employing veterans and unemployment rates.

Other Texas cities who made the list include San Antonio, which ranked No. 2, Austin, which landed at No. 5, and Fort Worth, which came in at No. 9.

In 2013, Houston ranked at the top of USAA and Hiring Our Heroes' list of cities where veterans could find a job, earning kudos for its below-average unemployment rate of 6.1 percent; its 2.6 percent job growth over the last year, which is among the top 10 percent of all metro areas, and its below-average median housing price of $149,500.

Houston has ranked on several lists recently, including being named one of"America's Favorite Cities" by Travel + Leisure magazine. The city appeared in the top 10 on Forbes' "Baby Boomtowns: The U.S. Cities Attracting the Most Families" in September, and several Houston suburbs were ranked by NerdWallet to be among the "Best Places for Young Families in Texas."
