With the recent flooding in Texas and Louisiana, I am reminded of the importance of having an Emergency Survival Kit.

You can't prevent disasters, but you can take charge of how you respond if you're prepared. The first step is putting together an emergency preparedness kit. What should go in an emergency kit?
Here are some basics:

• Your most important papers: Deed to your house, proof of insurance, medical records, passports, social security cards and a list of personal contacts. Digital and paper form is suggested.
• Water and food
• Flashlights and extra batteries
• Battery-operated radio
• First-Aid supplies
• Sanitation and hygiene supplies
• Cash
• Comfort items for kids

Another important thing to consider is looking to see whether your insurance is up to date. Know what your homeowners insurance covers. Most don't cover flooding but it's possible to add flood insurance to your policy in most cases. Check with your insurance provider before tragedy strikes.
