I listened to a motivational speaker last week, who was asked to describe Millennials. He used phrases that I actually agreed with. Expected participation trophies, were socially connected through facebook and other social media sites, little personal interacton, posted thier lives as being perfect and dreamy. As a parent of 2 millennials, I thought about them and their lives from this viewpoint. And it seemed as if the speaker was portraying millennials as who only think of themselves and their successes. What some may call selfish! After thinking about it for a couple of days, I've really come to the conclusion that yes that is true. But as the parent who raised these 2 millennials, I like to say, they are confient, strong minded, and represent a growing generation of needed change. They have seen so many technological advances in society, they don't even realize it's change. What a refreshing attitude. It's not embraced or feared, it just is! They received trophies for participating because it is important to participate. Participate in life! Win? Lose? That was not the point. It was encouragment for their participation. Facebook was monitored when they were first introduced to it. We followed them, monitored their computer time, knew who they were talking to. They have a very positive outlook on their lives, and they share that. Again, how refreshing! I'm proud of my 2 millennials and the life they are building, and choose to see them with positive attitudes rather than a false reality.
