Let’s Get Walking!

If you have been looking for homes recently, you may be running across an area’s  “walk scores”. What are walk scores and why should that matter when you’re looking for your home – or selling your home?Walk score is an independent website (and phone app) which rank communities and neighborhoods on how easy it is to walk to get to places as opposed to driving a car.

A home's Walk Score is important because:
  • Walkability and public transit are associated with higher home values
  • Transportation costs are the 2nd largest household expense
  • Commute time and places to walk are two of the most important criteria for home shoppers
  • A home's location (location efficiency) is often more important than the building's energy efficiency

How Walk Score Works

Walk Score helps you find a walkable place to live. Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100 that measures the walkability of any address. Learn about Transit Score and Bike Score.

Walk Score®

Description
90–100 Walker's ParadiseDaily errands do not require a car.
70–89 Very Walkable
50–69 Somewhat WalkableSome amenities within walking distance.
25–49 Car-DependentA few amenities within walking distance.
0–24 Car-DependentAlmost all errands require a car.

The city of Houston has an average Walk Score of 44 – which falls around being a car dependent city requiring most errands need a car. However, there are communities around Houston which are extremely walkable like Midtown – walkscore 81, Neartown - Montrose – walkscore 79, and Downtown – walkscore 77.
