Rain - Finally!

July 15th, 2013

Finally - Some badly needed rain has fallen in Houston.  Here my rain gauge shows a little less than an inch has fallen in the last 24 hours.  I took this picture today - July 15 in my yard.  Here are a few important tips for trying to keep your plantings alive during our long, hot summer.  Be sure to water newly planted trees and shrubs with long, slow drip watering to best allow roots to absorb water.  Soaker hoses are best bets and use them during early morning or late evening hours to prevent losing water to evaporation during hot temperatures during middle of the day.  Newly planted trees or shrubs have the greatest chance of dying during long, dry spells.  Be sure to water them long and slow when we go for long periods without needed rainfall.  Stressed plants are more likely to succumb to diseases or insect attacks also.  So keep up with your plants water needs - especially during the first year to two years after planting.  Once roots are established - those plants suited to our climate will be able to give you years of enjoyment.
