Keeping kids entertained

June 23rd, 2011

Once the summer heat sets in, it's harder for the kids to play outside for long, the pool gets boring, and the sibling squabbling begins. Smart moms usually have a few activities at the ready to keep the children occupied and self-entertained. Personally, I like the idea of theme activities -- play ideas that wrap around one main idea which is only limited to the imagination of the children involved. And it doesn't hurt if a little education is secretly thrown in the mix.

One such idea is space exploration. I have the kids create a space ship together using old packing boxes, duct tape, and various crafting items. Not only does this promote creativity, it also encourages cooperation and problem solving. Once the space ship is done, depending on the age range of the children, they can write a story and act it out or even film it. Creating their own costumes is another add on project that can be tons of fun.

The last time I did this with my son and his cousins, we taped a "news segment" reporting on a space invasion. We then made a "space snack" of colored popcorn and watched the play-back on the big screen. Of course, you can add extras like researching lunar eclipses, area 54, the solar system, or anything space related. Another option is to add a space-related movie.

A good theme-focused activity can take up an entire day if needed and provides flexibility and variety to break up the summer duldrums. It's also an excellant way to expand growing young minds! I like them because they serve all age levels and in familes with several children this is a must or somebody feels left out.

Since they do require some preparation, I start the summer by creating a few theme boxes filled with the basics needed for projects. I also keep things around like packing boxes and crates as well as empty cans, mailing tubes, and string. I am always amazed at what the children think to do with them!
