Houston Realtor and the Holidays

November 6th, 2010

Most folks spend time with family and friends during the Holidays.
However, for the few brave souls who need a place to live, the Holidays can offer a few unexpected favorable surprises.
If you find and close on a home by the end of the year, you will be eligible for a 20% reduction on your property taxes for 2011.  December is a busy time for agents because folks know they have only a couple of weeks to find and close on a home to take advantage of their Homestead exemption.  At the time of closing there is a one page form to fill out and send in.
Something to be aware of.  Filing your Homestead exemption is free of charge.  Unfortunately, you may receive ridiculous offers from people who state that they can handle this for you along with a hefty fee.
Don't be taken in by these people.  Have your agent give you the form at closing, fill it out, and send it in.  It is as easy as that and you just saved yourself 20% on your property taxes for 2011.
Until next time,
Good Home Hunting.
