Tips on looking for a House

July 25th, 2011

Home buying can be a fun & exciting experience if you know how to deal with the stress that comes with it. Being prepared before you start the home buying process can make it easier for you or your family. Here are some helpful tips:

1.) Research the neighborhood. Consider the location and home values in that area. If prices have dropped and are on the steady decline, you may want to ask yourself why? Also, check out the condition of the homes in the neighborhood. (Are the roofs in need of repair, paint chipping, stained siding or un-maintained lawns) The value of your home can decrease due to the condition of other homes surrounding it.

2.) Does it fit your budget? Figure what price range is comfortable for you and then don't waiver far from it. It is easy to fall in love with a house that falls outside of your comfort zone because it will have far more upgrades & features. Ask yourself if you really need those extra things. You can always buy a home and put in the upgrades in the future.

3.) See Multiple homes. Don't get too excited about one particular home before you look at enough comparibles. It is like buying the first wedding dress you try on. It may fit right but the next dress might be more stunning. Make sure your realtor is willing to show you more than a handful of houses. Also, dont see more than 5-7 homes in a day. You will start to mix them up.

4.) Be Practical. The perfect house doesn't exist. You may like one feature of a house and not another. The idea is to find a home that satisfies most of your needs.

5.) Look at the School District. If you have kids, researching the schools is important. Look at education levels, and success rates. A bad school can be a deal braker for some.

6.) Work with a Realtor. We are there to help. We have experience in the market and know what to look for. We work for you and have your best interests at heart.
