What will Homes of the Future Look Like?

October 17th, 2011

It is a question that has entered almost everyone's mind at some point. If asked this question in the 1970's what homes in the year 2015 would look like, well, you would get an episode of the Jetsons. However, what we do see are some trends that are increasingly more popular in builders. One thing that we expect to see are smaller home sizes. In today's market, the average home is around 2400 Sq Ft. The homes of the future will be 2100 Sq Ft or less. This allows the builder more creative freedom when designing spaces. Homes will be smaller but flow better and have more amenities. So what won't you see in 2015? The Living Room will be obsolete because many builders agree that it is a wasted space. Also, 5 bedroom homes will be harder to find.

Expect to see more:

- spacious laundry rooms
- master suite walk-in closets
- porches
- eat-in kitchens
- two-car garages
- ceiling fans

Expect to see less:

- mudrooms
- formal dining rooms
- four bedrooms or more
- media or hobby rooms
- skylights

You can also expect homes to be enviormentally friendly with all "green materials". Smaller houses means more efficient heating & cooling. Energy efficient windows & appliances will also cost you less on your electric bill.

In conclusion, we say "Bring on The Future!"
