Time to vote in The Woodlands, a Master Planned Community

October 22nd, 2009

Early voting in The Woodlands and surrounding areas has begun. As citizens, we are privileged to have the right to vote and voice our opinions in a calm and peaceful manner. It is important that we are informed and voice these opinions intelligently.

Three propositions that will be on our ballot in The Woodlands are listed here:

Proposition 1
Construction of three fire stations and the purchase of firefighting equipment for a total of $17.335 million. The new fire stations would be located in the Villages of Indian Springs and Creekside Park. The funding would also allow for reconstruction of Central Fire Station on Grogan’s Mill Road. The funds from this proposition would also be used to purchase equipment for these stations and to pay any Emergency Service District (ESD) debt allocable to The Woodlands Township upon removal of Township territory from the overlapping taxing jurisdiction of the ESD.

Proposition 2
Construction of parks and pathways, purchase of related equipment and renovation projects at existing parks and pools for a total of $12.38 million. This funding would be used to fund a portion of the park, pathway, park improvement and pool renovation capital projects included in the five-year capital improvement plan.

Proposition 3
Allow for permanent, tax-exempt bond refinancing of assumed debt in the amount of $20.225 million. This funding would be used to refinance existing debt assumed by the Township from the Community Associations and The Woodlands Fire Department.

I personally will vote in favor of these three propositions. This is an oppoortunity to improve our services without any tax increase. If we fail to pass these propositions, the fire stations will still need to be done and will likely result in a tax increase.

Joel Deretchin, of The Woodlands, said today that the number one source of physical fitness in the nation is use of pathways. Our miles of pathways for hiking, biking, walking help make this master planned community one of the best.

Whether you share my opinion or not, I encourage you to vote.
Early voting will take place Monday-Friday, October 19-30. From October 19-28 polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and October 29-30 polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
