Memorial Houston Maps: Neighborhood

Memorial’s history dates as early as the 1930’s, with the area primarily a residence for wealthy Houstonians. The earliest homes in Memorial consist of large plot homes with large back lots for horseback riding. Subsequently, residents sold their lots, which paved way for more homes to be developed.

In the 50’s and 60’s, real estate developers saw the potential of Memorial as a home site beyond then newly constructed 610 Loop, as the development is primarily focused on the Inner Loop area. Memorial became a development for upper-middle-class subdivisions. Today, Memorial serves as a home site to many of Houston’s upscale real estate development.

One of the main draws of living in Memorial is its 1,466-acre namesake public park, the Memorial Park. Serving as a common backyard for Houston’s residents, Memorial Park offers a wide range of facilities such as biking trails, swimming pool, softball field, tennis court, picnic area, and so much more. Memorial Park is located near the border of Memorial area, just within the 610 Loop.

Residents of Memorial can take advantage of the area’s proximity to many of the city’s employment centers, including three of Houston’s biggest financial areas. Downtown Houston, the city’s main financial district, is merely 20 minutes away from the area via Katy Freeway.

The Galleria, an upscale financial district located outside the 610 Loop, is just a few block away from the eastern section of Memorial. The Galleria serves as a new hub for many companies in energy trading, finance, and legal sectors, and is accessible via several arterial roads that pass through the Buffalo Bayou.

Memorial does not come short of luxuries to offer to its residents, as several shopping malls in the city are just a couple of klicks away from the area. Memorial City Mall, which regained popularity among shopper after its renovation in 2001, houses several famous brands such as Target, Macy’s, Sears, JC Penney, and Dillard’s. Furthermore, scores of commercial establishments like restaurants, spas, salons, and other stores are scattered throughout the vicinity of Memorial.
