Trees! I got the opportunity to hang out with fellow neighbors and some super cool board members from the Westbury Civic Club this past weekend. Saturday was the 35th anniversary of Houston’s Keep Houston Beautiful initiative, which is centered around sprucing up the neighborhoods and parks in our great city. The folks at Westbury hosted their annual Keep Westbury Beautiful event again this year and was it ever fun!
Approximately 50 kind-hearted folks showed up to Hager Park near Anderson Elementary ready for work on Saturday morning. Our firm donated a bunch of fresh, hot donuts from Shipley’s in the neighborhood and the sugar high kept everyone working hard until the last tree was planted around 11am. Apache Corporation donated the trees that we received from Keep Houston Beautiful. In all, 4 loblolly pine, 25 red bud, 20 white oak, and 5 wax myrtles were planted in the park. This planting will help keep Houston’s tree canopy healthy and beautiful. For more information on native Texas trees, visit here.
Volunteers from all over Westbury came to help out the civic club and help beautify our neighborhood. The volunteers ranged from 3 years old to over 60! It was precious to watch the little kids work hard, digging and planting the trees! They really had a great time and it was a nice family-friendly activity. We were all rewarded by the Civic Club with pizza afterwards.
Even Houston City Council Member Larry Green, representing our very own District K, stopped by to visit with residents and lend a hand to the littlest tree-planters in our group of volunteers. Westbury is a very active community with strong ties and wonderful neighbors who work to ensure a nice community for everyone to live in and enjoy. It’s no wonder that Westbury was named best hidden neighborhood, was recently named in Houstonia Magazine as one of the top 25 neighborhoods to live in all of Houston and is a Super Neighborhood in the City of Houston!
The event was organized by Civic Club events coordinator and Westbury resident, Stephanie Lester, and was great fun for all involved. It was an honor to work side by side with volunteers from Lanier Middle School, Westbury Christian School and the Westbury neighborhood. I’m looking forward to the next Westbury event very soon!
