Quick Ways to Organize Your Montgomery County Home

Clutter and a messy home can distract buyers from seeing the best features of your property. Often, with work, or school, and everything else which comes our way in life, it can be difficult to find time to keep up on regular chores, much less big cleaning projects. So, how do you keep a house organized and tidy when you are trying to sell your home too?

Eliminate clutter a little at a time, regularly. When you’re folding clothes, set aside any torn items to throw away once done. When hanging up clothes, grab a few pieces you no longer wear, and set them aside. Do the same when you put clothing away in your dresser. A great way to add more space and lessen clutter is to switch to thinner, felt-covered hangers. Clothes remain hanging, and your closet floor stays clean. Don’t forget to toss single socks as well; if you can't find the mate after a couple of loads, it's probably gone. For gently worn clothing you no longer wear, donate it.

The kitchen is an easy place for clutter to accumulate. When it’s time to put away leftovers, if you come across a container without a lid or vice versa, and you can’t find its partner quickly, toss or recycle the piece. As you’re cooking meals, look around at what's laying around. Begin sorting through utensils or odds and ends in drawers and shelves. If you have a dozen drawers in your kitchen, and you organized one per night while dinner was cooking, you could clean them all within less than two weeks. Recycle, donate or toss anything which is mismatched, or you don't use.

Further utilize your time in the kitchen by cleaning while you cook. Wipe down counters and appliances. While selling your property, be sure to wipe down cabinet doors, the refrigerator, dishwasher and stove regularly too. Set used dishes in the dishwasher as you finish with them, or have a sink full of soapy water ready to soak cook wear and clean quickly when done. After you’ve eaten, food has cooled as well as the stove or oven, put everything away and finish cleaning up. This keeps your work in the kitchen to a minimum and leaves it sparkling.

As you go about from room to room in your home, take items with you which need to be put away. Set mail on your desk to be reviewed, have the kids pick up their errant toys, or put the book you finished last night back in the bookshelf. Doing so will help keep what can become a big project over time, a quick and simple daily task instead. When you are out of the house, running errands or off to visit friends, have your ready-to-be-donated items by the door, and take them to drop off as part of your time away.

Time in your bathroom is another opportunity for cleaning and organizing. Look around for anything you no longer use. Toss or recycle empty containers, old soaps or lotion bottles. Clean out your medicine cabinet too, as it’s best not to hold onto expired medications. Do a quick spot clean when done with the sink, toilet or shower. This will give you a bathroom which is easier to clean, and less likely to develop mold and mildew.

As for areas which collect a lot of clutter, such as the garage, closets, and sheds, handle these one at a time. Select a day and spend a a few hours at a time on one area. When you find things you no longer need or use, toss or donate them. These larger storage areas can take longer to fully clean and organize, but when done, they will seem like new spaces in your home and be ready to show off to potential buyers.

Finally, how you handle your garbage can also affect the clutter in your home. For example, Amazon product boxes can be used to store your donations, rather than letting them pile up, taking up valuable space. Also, take advantage of their Give Back Box Program to make this even easier. Throw out or recycle any other trash as you come across it as well.

Decluttering and cleaning can be intimidating. However, getting a little done each day, helps reduce the amount of work and stress overall.
