In Houston, your dollar has a much higher buying power than virtually any other major metropolitan area in the country.

  • The Q2/09 ACCRA Cost of Living Index shows that Houston's overall after-taxes living costs are 11% below the nationwide average, largely due to housing costs that are 26% below the average.
  • In the context of the 27 participating metropolitan areas with more than 2 million residents, Houston's cost-of-living advantage is even more pronounced. Houston's housing costs are 42% below the average for the large metro areas, and its overall costs are 20% below the average for this group.


If you live in Houston, you can golf and enjoy other outdoor activities year round.

  • Houston has normal daily temperatures ranging from the 40s (degrees Fahrenheit) and highs in the 60s in January to lows in the 70s and highs in the 90s in July.
  • Houston averages only 18.0 dates per year with low temperatures of 32°F or less; temperatures rarely reach 100°F. Most of the Houston MSA lies in a zone with 260-275 frost-free days per year. Precipitation

  • Houston's housing costs are more than 25% lower than the national average and 42% lower than the average of the 27 metro areas with more than 2 million residents.
  • Low housing costs and a low cost of living are the main reasons Houston's overall living costs are 11% below the nationwide average for places of all sizes and 20% below the large-metro average.
  • According to Apartment Data Services, the Houston region has over 550,000 apartments. Occupancy stood at 86.3% at the end of 2008, down 1.1 percentage points on the year,
    according to CB Richard Ellis.
  • The Houston residential real estate market currently has about 46,000 active listings.
