Celebrate the local Houston art scene with Spacetaker and Boheme Wine Bar at "Cultured Cocktails" each Thursday this month with a focus on the Society for Performing Arts this Thursday, Jan. 5th, 5-10 pm at Boheme Wine Bar. // Kick off 2012 in cinema style by becoming a of Aurora Picture Show at their Member Rush Party. They will host a community potluck and backyard keg party to bring all current and future members together on Friday, Jan. 6th at 6 pm. Evening will include an informal screening of works from the Mobile Media Literacy initiatives. // Heights First Saturday Arts Market - every first Saturday of each month, the Heights shopping district on the parking lot of Wind Water Gallery turns into an eclectic street fair, each with something new to offer. The Jan. 7th market is Hawaiian themed with tasty Hawaiian bites, Hawaiian-ized pop hits, hula hoops, belly dancers and dozens of artists. The Grass Skirts band performs late in the day with tropical standards "On the Beach at Waikiki," "Blue Hawaii" and "Tiny Bubbles." // Houston Premier Screening of the Movie "Thrive" is Wednesday, Jan. 11th, 6:30 pm at Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. of Houston. Stay afterwards and enjoy a group discussion on the movie. // The River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) and the InterActive Theater Company will present the children’s favorite, Peter and the Wolf, at The Houston Zoo, featuring the ROCO Quintet. There will be two performances on Sunday, Jan. 15th at 2 pm and 3:30 pm in the Brown Education Center Auditorium and event is free with zoo admission. // Don't miss your opportunity to enjoy Discovery Green's Outdoor Ice Skating Rink open now until Jan. 22nd with lots of special events like Disco on the Ice. Fun for both adults and the kiddos. // Mark your calendars for the 12th Annual Fruit Tree Sale going on Saturday, Jan. 14th, 9 am-1 pm at UofH Robertson Stadium. Select from a huge array of trees that are appropriate for our Houston climate that you can't find anywhere else! // Hop on a bike and take a ride through side streets, trails and residential areas in the heart of Houston on the Bayou City Outdoors' Farmers Market Ride. The morning will begin with coffee at Onion Creek in the Heights and then bikers will cruise through two to three markets to shop for fresh produce, sauces, jams and bread. // The Sugar Land Home & Garden Show is Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21st-22nd at the Stafford Center. This years show features over 200 exhibitors and a dozen speakers. // Enjoy wine, beer, cocktails, sophisticated bites from the concession stand + other homecoming fare at the I Love HYPA (Houston Young People for the Arts) Homecoming Gala on Saturday, Jan. 21st., 7:30-11 pm at Advantage BMW Midtown. Come out and support the arts with the homecoming party you never had! // Join Glasstire and the Fresh Arts Coalition for the annual Houston Art Ball themed "Disaster Ball 2012" on on Friday, Jan. 27th, 8-11 pm at La Colombe d'Or Mansion. Prepare to party like it is your last night on earth at one of their signature evenings of great costumes, an awesome art auction, and dancing the night away! // Explore the magnificent architecture between Hermann Square and Discovery Green as well as the changing dynamics of downtown at the Towers and Trees Downtown Walking Tour on Saturday, Jan. 28th, 10 am-12 pm at City Hall. // Moores Opera Center presents "Amelia" - haunted by her father’s death as a pilot in the Vietnam War, a woman comes to terms with the ghosts of her past and dreams of flight and rebirth. Amelia runs Jan. 27th through the 30th at the Moores School of Music.
